1.1.1.1 – THE FASTEST DNS SERVER, WITH PROTECTION

1.1.1.1

If you access the Internet via a broadband router then you will no doubt be using the built in DNS server provided by your ISP. DNS servers just lookup the ip address of the webpage you are looking for, but it is possible to change your DNS server to different ones around the world that have specfic features like super-fast speed, family filters, DDOS protection and many other things.

Cloudfare’s 1.1.1.1 and a backup of 1.0.0.1 offer very fast lookups and filters from bad websites. You can also use OpenDNS for family filtered lookups using 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123.

“To use FamilyShield, you should set your DNS server entries as: 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123.  On our website, you’ll may notice that OpenDNS’ DNS servers are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, but these do not apply to FamilyShield customers.”

CURRENT ACCOUNT SWITCH GIVES 3 YEARS FORWARDING

Stray payments from old accounts after you’ve switched will continue for 3 years, but that may be extended to 10 under new plans. For example, if you’ve switched from Barclays to Starling and somebody keeps sending you payments to your old Barclays, then it will still be credited to your Starling, even 3 years from now. The new plan is to continue as long as a payment is made within an 18 month period (a keep-alive period) for up to 10 years, otherwise the forwarding will stop.

TURN OFF WI-FI AT NIGHT?

While you are sleeping, as your body repairs and regenerates, as your brain sorts and files memories, why not do yourself a favour and turn off your WiFi?

It’s questionable whether EMF radiation is having a lifetime impact on your health, but why not buy a timer for £5 from Wilko, Argos or Homebase and set it to go off automatically from 11pm until 7am (and engage airplane mode on your phone as well if you have it next to you in the bedroom).

There’s very little actual data showing even basic correlation of smartphone and WiFi use causing cancer or tumours, because it’s thought that the frequencies used (being lower even than visible light) passes through us harmlessly and we’ve now had 20 years of data to research the effects.

Also use a blue filter if you read your smartphone in bed, many smartphones now come with “comfort mode” viewing buit in these days but if not download an app.

If you want to go the whole hog you should use your smartphone at least 1 inch away from your ear, or use a headphone cable, and get an EMF liner for your bag which blocks harmful radiation.

GDPR COMES INTO EFFECT 25TH MAY 2018

The new General Data Protection Regulation comes into effect across all member states (which includes UK right now) which means an upgrade to the data privacy laws across Europe. In simple terms, the rules are designed to make companies who deal with personal data look after them with more care and consideration in order to guard against data breaches like the one we saw with Talk Talk recently.

I have updated my Privacy Policy to make you aware of how secure my systems are, what data I might hold on you and how you can request or remove any personal data. Also, if you want to continue receiving my Newsletter I am asking everyone to consent to it again by opting in on my website by clicking on the Subscribe button.

WINDOWS 10 PROFILE CORRUPTION

There’s a strange thing happening occasionally on Windows 10 machines, the profile gets corrupted and you end up with a TEMP user to log in with, and all your icons are missing. The fix is quite easy and I outline it below:

  1. Start, Run, Regedit
  2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-12345… (whatever your user profile)
  3. Set “State” to “0”
  4. Set “RefCount” to “0” (if it doesn’t exist make it – DWORD 32bit)
  5. Reboot

BTW, have you ever seen such an absolute little evasive shit as Jeremy Hunt? This man checked out from helping the nation’s health long ago. And funny how his name rhymes with his general constitution.

NEVER, EVER BUY A NAS DRIVE! – HERE ARE THE REASONS:

Network Attached Storage “seems” like a great idea, a nice, neat, little box sitting in the office whirring away storing your office files and not taking up too much room or power. BUT little do you know how dangerous these devices are to your files, in so many ways:

  1. They contain a mirrored pair of hard drives so that if one drive fails the other carries on, but there is no warning because no one is monitoring it, and believe me, it WILL fail eventually.
  2. They run Linux, so unless you know your way around it expertly, you are gonna eventually hit trouble.
  3. You can’t hook up a monitor to it, so if you can’t access it via the network port you are stuffed.
  4. In the event of failure, if you take it apart, remove the drives and hook them up to a PC you *might* be lucky to see the data.

My colleague was asked to help set up a NAS for a new customer, “Throw it in the bin now,” was his advice. “But it’s got two drives”, “Ok, throw both of them in the bin now!”

A NAS drive earlier today, before losing all your data.

ITV1 TRICKS OF THE RESTAURANT TRADE

No wonder we are getting cancer and dying. They get the rice pre-cooked and frozen, the butter chicken packed in plastic and microwaved when ordered.

Sheesh, I think it’s gone too far. And the worse thing is the presenters Simon Rimmer and Sophie Morgan are smiling and laughing all the way through it, taking it all as normal…THIS REALLY IS NOT NORMAL.

I eat out maybe twice a month, but even that seems too much knowing how restaurant food is prepared. Thankfully, I prefer home-cooked food anyway and I know exactly what’s going into it.

EUROVISON 2018!!!

After carefully reviewing all the entries several times I have made my decision BUT that won’t really help in predicting who will win. Although this is the world’s PREMIER song writing contest, there are a few peculiarities within the voting system that make it difficult for the best song to win.

Firstly, there are many, many people who still think the Eurovision is a “Boom Bang-a-Bang” type affair and will pick the song that has some chintzy novelty to it (ISRAEL). Then there are the countries that block vote for each other (Greece / Cyprus, Russia / Belarus, Serbia / Croatia, Sweden / Norway) usually because they are neighbours or ending hostilities but in the case Turkey / Germany more to do with the massive Turkish population in Germany. Then there are the countries like France and Britain or, strangely, Ireland and Britain who hate each other. Also, there are the smaller countries like San Marino and Malta who will be coming near the bottom, again, not because of voting but more to do with lack of promotion and song-writing credentials.

Taking these into consideration, you can arrive at a prediction with some manipulation of the votes. The UK could win again one day if we split into Wales, Scotland, N.Ireland and awarded each other top marks, and perhaps reviewed our Foreign Policy. The voting system has been altered slightly for this year, adding some weight to the top ranked song by group of judges and taking out the outlier judgements, similar to the marking in Olympic figure skating, and also the results will be announced in 2 stages, jury then popular. This means the winner won’t be known until the last moment.

My picks? Top: FYR Macedonia, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden. Bottom: Iceland, San Marino, Denmark. Winner: Israel or Belarus.

Who should win Eurovision 2018? Vote now!

WINDOWS 10 APPS NOT LOADING FIRST TIME [SOLVED]

I have been experiencing a problem with the new Metro apps on Windows 10, they half load up then stop. If you close then re-open and they are absolutely fine. It seems this is quite a common problem and the solution is to create a new Power Plan in Settings. That’s all there is to it (see My Custom Plan 1 below).

WINDOWS 10 – UAC SET to NONE, NOT WORKING

There’s a peculiar thing going on with User Account Control, you set it to “none” but in fact it doesn’t actually change it in the registry. Check the registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. In the details pane (Right Pane), locate the EnableLUA key (REG_DWORD type). Double click to Modify. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.

THE START MENU is THE DESKTOP NOW!

In Windows 10, the Desktop is still there but it plays a less important role. The idea is that the (Metro) Start Menu IS the Desktop and Start Menu rolled into one. Just as you would with the Desktop, you have to configure it to your liking, your needs. You can also change the settings to show the various folders you need quick access to ON THE LEFT. It even says “START” at the top. In a way, this is better than the Desktop because you need only click the Start Button to access your programs and folders, with an unlimited scroll all the way down, like the proverbial turtles.

BROTHER CONTROL CENTER 4 CONTAINS MULTIPLE PRINTERS

Over a few months you tend to get several Brother printers appearing in the Control Center program for some weird reason. The extra printers/scanners have a #2 or #3 designation and you can build up a nice big list of them. In the picture below, the printer is a MFC-J4625DW LAN but there are 2 more, MFC-J4625DW LAN #2 and MFC-J4625DW. What you should do is choose the non-functioning extra printers and then choose Uninstall from the Tools section. Do this as many times as is necessary, bearing in mind if you remove all the printers then you will need to re-install the brother printer driver software from scratch because the final printer uninstall gets rid of everything.

WINDOWS 10 OCCASIONALLY FREEZES…

…and the Disk activity in Task Manager is 100%. These are classic symptoms of a disk problem so it’s time to replace it. My suggestion would be to go SSD by cloning your disk with MiniTool. You connect BOTH drives, old and new to the PC or laptop and then do the clone. When finished, you remove the old drive and with any luck you will boot off the new drive and it will no longer freeze AND be super fast.

OUTLOOK – VERY SLOW WHEN REPLYING

Sometimes in Outlook you can find it takes ages to reply to an email. This could be because you received an email in Word format and your Outlook changed to Word as the default compose mode. Just go into Options and put it back to HTML – it will be super-fast again now.

MICROSOFT STORE – SPOTLIGHT

If you have Windows 8 or 10 then you are able to access the Microsoft Store which gives you tons of “Metro” apps, designed to work across ALL Windows platforms by keyboard, mouse or touchscreen. Many are free to install and use (go for FREE not FREE* – too may ads) . Here are some of the highlights:

Send, Browse all your WhatsApp chats and media via the Metro app.

A collection of classic Solitaire games.

Buy from Amazon using the app.

Track the Bitcoin markets.

Purchase a version of Office for you PC at home, school or work.

Remote control another PC with the Teamviewer app.

If you have Windows 10 then you also have an App Store that allows you to download Apps, Games & Movies just like Apple’s or Google’s. It’s called the Microsoft Store and you have a link in your Taskbar on any Windows 10 machine by default. Many are FREE but some do contain rather intrusive adverts, so much so that you have to look for Free instead of Free* or you will need to buy the app if you like it. To uninstall an app go into the Windows 10 Start Menu (yes, the new “Metro” one).

WHY DRINKING CHOCOLATE TASTES RUBBISH

In a nutshell, chocolate is made by roasting the beans, pressing or grinding to separate the cocao powder from the cacao mass, adding sugar and then re-combining, with added fat. So, it should come as absolutely no surprise that drinking chocolate tastes rubbish as it does not contain the cocao mass. It’s really only half the product. To put that into perspective, white chocolate IS the cocao mass, and that’s exactly what’s missing from drinking chocolate.

INTERNET PORN – NOFAP

I recently watched that episode of Seinfeld where the George gets “caught” by his mother and the gang end up having a contest of abstination. In those days sexual gratification came with relationships with real people, or in Kramer’s case looking out of the apartment windows for naked ladies undressing! These days however kids are finding Internet porn everywhere and it is having a detrimental effect on their lives. A movement has arisen called “NOFAP” which advocates not looking at porn and seeking help in doing so.

2.7MN EUROPEANS IN FACEBOOK BREACH

Facebook have indicated that Cambridge Analytica may have harvested the personal data of 87 million people round the world, 2.7 million in Europe.

Personally, I cancelled my Facebook account last year and it came as a relief to me. I wasn’t sure how much personal information they extracted from me, but I was certainly spending too much time catching up with people I barely knew, and often getting myself into trouble.

I probably spend a bit too much time on YouTube but at least it’s restricted to mainly Tennis and Tech.

BITCOIN… END OF BANKS?

When you see stories in the main stream media trashing Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies you know something good is happening. The latest stories are about how the Bitcoin phenomenon is a bubble and how people will get burned.

Obviously this is propaganda and is to be ignored. What’s happening is volitility whilst things settle down. Bitcoin is supposed to be a monetary unit to be used just like money to buy and sell goods and services, but it seems for the moment that it’s being hijacked by Wall Street to make a quick buck or to trash it’s reputation.

In a few years you will pay your employees in Bitcoin and they will pay their bills with it, if that doesn’t happen the banks have won and it’s business as usual.

Interesting times we are living through.

WINDOWS 10 – THICKER BORDERS PLEASE

I am a bloody genius with a mouse and Windows but even I can’t easily grab the borders of a Window in Windows 10. There’s no “Setting” anymore to change the border thickness so you have to do it with a Theme. The theme is here if you want to have a go:-

Create a file on the desktop, text, paste that stuff in and save, rename file to extension “.theme” and double-click.

WINDOWS 10 – NEARBY SHARING OVER BLUETOOTH

Nearby sharing has been introduced with the new Spring Creators Update of Windows 10. I know, I know, it’s a bit “meh, who cares” but it could be useful for laptop users with their built-in Bluetooth. Most people would probably dump the file on their Dropbox and then send them a link via email.

AMYUNI PDF CONVERTER – THE ENDLESS PDF ERROR

That old chestnut got me again today, what an Right Royal Pain it is because it usually means re-installing the Windows OS (yes, Windows itself) and re-installing Quickbooks (or Sage) to alleviate the error. I found this from 2008:-

As you most probably have read in the forum, error code -41 is generated when “trying to activate a new version of the PDF Converter with an activation key of the previous version”.

So it seems there might be a fix where you remove registry entries and then install again.

The situation you have described occurs because there are a couple of registry keys which get created when the install.exe is initially run and these registry keys contain licensing information. These keys can not be accessed by standard users and therefore cause the situation you have described.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers\<Printer Name>\PrinterDriverData] “TC”=dword “Code”=”07…F” “License”=”Your License value”
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\<Printer Name>\PrinterDriverData] “TC”=dword “Code”=”07…F” “License”=”Your License value”
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\Current\Software\<Printer Name>] “TC”=dword “Code”=”07…F” “License”=”Your License value”

In order to resolve this issue you can
A- Include the install.ini file with the correct “License to” and “Activation code” values in the same directory as the install.exe. The install.exe will read these values from the ini file.
B- You can install the printer and assign the “License to” and “Activation code” values to it by passing these values as parameters to the install.exe.
E.g.: Install -s “My Company Printer” -n “Evaluation Developer License” -c “07ABCDA0ABCDABCDABCD012301230123…..”.

  1. Browse to your network printer objects.
  2. Right-click the default printer object and select Properties for Windows XP and Printer Propertiesfor Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Note:If the error occurs while printing to a .PDF or a .XLS file, then also verify the permissions on the TS PDF Generator.
  3. From the Security tab, check Allow on the proper users group for PrintManage Printers andManage Documents.
  4. Click [OK].

Hi, We had the same problem.  We installed CutePDF writer for free, and then you select this as your printer from the drop down list of printers.  When  you download the software from their website, http://www.cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf/writer.asp, it automatically sets up the printer in your list of printers……
See how you go with that…

GLASSES OFF TO READ?

Found this intersting article about people who suffer from BOTH myopia (short-sightedness) and presbyopia (long-sightedness) and what the options are.

After age 40, the single pair of glasses or contact lenses you previously wore generally will no longer give you clear vision at all distances — or at least not without some compromises. These vision problems are caused by presbyopia, which affects all of us beginning in middle age and reduces our ability to see at all distances. Many vision correction options are available, such as presbyopia surgery and multifocal contact lenses or eyeglasses. If you need cataract surgery, you also have the option of choosing multifocal intraocular lenses to restore your ability to see at all distances. In some cases, however, you may need to consider a combination of options to fully address problems caused by presbyopia.

If you are nearsighted, you have an advantage when you reach your 40s. Once presbyopia occurs, nearsighted eyes still see well up-close — if you remove your eyeglasses. Of course, with your glasses removed, distance vision is blurred. So you will need to put your glasses back on to see clearly across the room. Beginning at around age 40, you’ll find that the usual glasses or contacts you always wore will not correct focusing problems caused by presbyopia. The amount of nearsightedness you have determines how close or far you need to hold an item to see it clearly without your glasses on. If you are mildly nearsighted (with a prescription of -1.50 or -2.00 D, for example) you will see very well at a normal reading distance of 14 to 16 inches from your face. But if you’re highly nearsighted (let’s say -5.00 D or higher), you’ll have to bring items much closer to your eyes to see them clearly. If that’s the case, you may want to consider the next option.

SLEEP DOCTOR ON THIS MORNING

I have just finished reading Matthew Walker’s excellent book “Why We Sleep”, and here he is with Philip and Holly on This Morning. You need 8 hours sleep everynight and evolution hasn’t selected it out of us, or any other creature. Why? Because NREM and REM (the 2 main stages of sleep) are responsible for repair and sorting. Without sleep you would be dead within a few weeks. Here, Matthew is explaining how to wind-down in the evening, dim the lights, stop eating and drinking etc in order to get a proper night’s rest.

DELETE FACEBOOK

Facebook not only steals 2 hours from your day, it also steals your data and sells it to other people. I deleted my account 2 months ago, which was quite difficult actually. Even Brian Acton, who sold Whatsapp to Facebook, is recommending we all get rid of Facebook ASAP! A quick guide to deleting Facebook is available here (with the option of downloading an archive of your account first):
