MICROSOFT OFFICE 2013 – KEY UNINSTALL/REINSTALL

Technically, you can’t uninstall Office 2013 product keys, but the theory is that you can uninstall your copy of Office from one PC and reinstall on another. So, it was with much satisfaction that I managed to achieve said uninstall/reinstall that I had never before achieved, completely legal and above board, with a genuine proper paid-for key, but using “Office Toolkit” from a dodgy website. It’s sad I had to go to these lengths, but hey, why let MS get away with it? After all, I had genuinely paid for the key!

You need to use the “Enter Custom Key” option on the Product Keys tab. Now, some of you might be saying “Where do you get this Office Toolkit program from?” Well, if you have to ask you probably shouldn’t be doing it!

THINSTUFF – UPDATE OF SHARED LIBS CAN DISABLE IT

Please note that an update of another program that uses the same libraries can disable Thinstuff completely so that your remote server becomes single user again as if there was no Thinstuff installed. I can definitely say that one of those programs is GFS Delivery Client.

SAGE LINE 50 – NOT LAUNCHING

You launch Sage from the icon, it flashes up the green logo, but the Company Chooser box doesn’t appear. You will need to uninstall Sage, search your PC for “Sage*”, then delete all the matching folders and files. To make it easier, use Everything Search to perform this operation. There is obviously a file somewhere that is corrupt or referring to something that is no longer available.

PAT TESTER – COM PORT NOT FULLY INSTALLED

If you have an issue with your PAT testing software, such as KEW Report, then you may need to install the driver for the USB/COM port device. You will find the driver on the CD that came with the PAT tester, under a folder called Driver. Once installed, you should be able to choose the correct COM port (it might be something way down the list like COM23) and then you will be able to download the data.

62226 TEXT FROM PAYPAL, SCAM?

Here’s a strange one, I received a text from PayPal asking me to confirm an eBay transaction I had just made. The amount was exactly right, but I had never received such a request before so this was quite worrying. I decided not to confirm the transaction and it went through anyway. I suspect it is a scam to get you to cough up a premium rate text but it looks like it is actually from PayPal.

Not content with adding 3% more or less to every transaction they now also want us to top up their massive world piggy bank with premium rate text charges. Shame on you PayPal, you genius baddies.

DYNAPDF.DLL – HALF A PAGE PROBLEM

This is either because you need to change to using OutputTo method (see earlier tip) or you need to set scaling on (Auto Resize) in your report, in design mode.

Earlier Tip:

When using DynaPDF.DLL with Access 2007, 2010 and 2013 to print a report, you may only get half a page. To solve, you have to dispense with ConvertReportToPDF function and use Docmd.OutputTo instead:-

numVersioneAccess = CLng(SysCmd(acSysCmdAccessVer))
If numVersioneAccess <= 10 Then ‘ Access 2003

blRet = ConvertReportToPDF(vReport1, vbNullString, FilePath, False, False, 150, “”, “”, 0, 0, 0)

Else ‘ Access 2007 or over

DoCmd.OutputTo acOutputReport, vReport1, acFormatPDF, FilePath

End If

BIG PHARMA FINDS CURES?

I hate to break it to you, but drug companies don’t find medicines for diseases, they find diseases for medicines. Examples of this are everywhere:-

  • AZT – a cancer drug from the 60s, they switched to using it for HIV in the 80s
  • Statins – a drug developed for hypercholesterolemia, they switched to using it for lowering LDL cholesterol
  • Viagra – a drug developed to lower blood pressure, they switched to using it for erectile dysfunction

And hundreds of other cases, no doubt. What’s wrong with that? Well, just look at the first two, AZT wasn’t a cure for HIV, in fact it allegedly killed more people than it cured and it put a whole generation off HIV drugs completely. Statins lower LDL cholesterol which has been shown to be completely irrelevant to heart disease. If you put a 1000 patients on statins for 3 years you *may* prevent 2 heart attack deaths, which is statistically insignificant.

BLACK BOX INSURANCE…DON’T DO IT!

You might think it is worth saving a few quid on your insurance by having a black box installed but the consequences of transgressions by speeding or braking too quickly, which are very easy to do, is far too punitive….leading to having a policy cancelled and then having quotes of £8000.

KINGHT RIDER WAS RUBBISH!

I obviously never properly watched Knight Rider as a kid because, having just sat through an episode, the whole plot, storyline and acting is shambolic. Michael Knight just had to “turbo boost” KIT into the air to hit a building so that it would rupture a pipe thus saving a young lady trapped inside a pumping station. However, he pulls her out of the pipe via a near-by inspection hatch, no pipe rupturing necessary. Did we really think this was good? I can’t imagine we’ll be saying the same thing about Game of Thrones in 30 years!

OUTLOOK: TURN OFF CONVERSATION VIEW

There is a feature (which I can’t really believe even exists) called “Conversation View” in Outlook (and Gmail) which should be called “Confusion View” because it causes normal emails to be completely missed by grouping them together if it sees the subject and parties involved as part of the same conversation.

Fortunately, you can turn it off in View, Show as Conversations. In Gmail, it’s under Settings, General. Sadly, you can’t turn it off in the Gmail App which is why I use Edison or MyMail App.

THE NO. 1 MOST EFFICACIOUS DRUG IS…VITAMIN D

Some recent studies are revealing that Vitamin D is the most important element in the body to fight cancer and a whole raft of other diseases. Vitamin D, or rather a steroid hormone substrate, is produced on exposure to the UVb light from the sun and circulates through the blood system enabling your immune system to respond where necessary.

Unfortunately, over the last few decades we’ve been told to fear the sun, and worse, to stay indoors or use sunscreen whenever we venture outside. But getting proper levels of Vitamin D helps your body fight cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, ms, diabetes and flu. The common cold is mainly active during winter, when exposure to the sun is at it’s year round lowest, and the more northerly people live, the more likely they are to catch a cold.

GMAIL FOLDERS

There is one important fact about Gmail that is stopping you from understanding it…Gmail doesn’t actually have folders.

All emails are actually in [All Mail] but some have labels, such as Inbox, Drafts, Spam etc. so they appear to be in separate folders. They’re not.

If you access Gmail via Outlook or Thunderbird then those labels are interpreted as folders, and this is where the confusion happens.

Another interesting tidbit is that [All Mail] contains all your sent emails, but it automatically sorts anything sent by you into another special folder called [Sent].

So you see, “There is no spoon”.

DESKTOP ICONS DISAPPEAR OCCASSIONALLY

On your Windows 7 PC, shortcuts that you create on the desktop may go missing.

This can happen if the the System Maintenance troubleshooter detects the shortcuts as broken.
The System Maintenance troubleshooter performs a weekly maintenance of the operating system. The System Maintenance troubleshooter either fixes problems automatically or reports problems through Action Center. When there are more than four broken shortcuts on the desktop, the System Maintenance troubleshooter automatically removes all broken shortcuts from the desktop.

What is a broken link?

A “Broken” shortcut is a shortcut to a file, folder or drive that may not always be available, for example, a desktop shortcut for a USB device may be regarded as broken if the USB device is not connected when the System Maintenance troubleshooter performs its maintenance, or, a network folder that is currently not available due to the network not being available.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Remove all but 4 broken shortcuts from your desktop
Keep the number of broken shortcuts on your desktop to four or less. You might accomplish this by removing all but 4 of your most used shortcuts on the Desktop. If have more than 4 shortcuts, you can also create a folder on your desktop and move the shortcuts to that folder. These shortcuts will not be removed since they don’t sit directly on the desktop.

Method 2: Disable the System Maintenance troubleshooter
If you must have more than four broken shortcuts on your desktop, you can disable the System Maintenance troubleshooter. Control Panel, Troubleshooting, Change Settings, Off

SAGE EMAIL VIA OUTLOOK WITH TWO PROFILES

Be careful if you send Sage reports to customers via Outlook with 2 profiles as your precious work might never hit the inbox as expected. I don’t think Sage can cope with this scenario and therefore you end up with nothing happening and your reports dissappear.

AGAIN, WEIRD PRINT SETTINGS WITH KONICA MY TAB

When you set up all your print settings for your Konica Minolta BizHub and click Add (to make a favourite) DON’T FORGET to click “Select All” to override everything with what you just set. I mean, if you selected A4, Tray 2 etc then presumably you want those settings to happen, but by default they won’t unless you choose Select All while saving the settings with a name. Bonkers.
