AGAIN, WEIRD PRINT SETTINGS WITH KONICA MY TAB

When you set up all your print settings for your Konica Minolta BizHub and click Add (to make a favourite) DON’T FORGET to click “Select All” to override everything with what you just set. I mean, if you selected A4, Tray 2 etc then presumably you want those settings to happen, but by default they won’t unless you choose Select All while saving the settings with a name. Bonkers.

NURSE STUDY FINDS LINK BETWEEN CANCER AND LACK OF SLEEP

A study in China collating 61 studies has found a link between night shift workers and certain types of cancer.

I find this interesting because I recently read Matthew Walker’s book “Why We Sleep” and he mentions 8 hours sleep per night is absolutely necessary for good health.

The increase may come from the lymph system not removing cells that are due for recycling (about every 6 weeks) which occurs at night, instead they fester and can turn cancerous.

Two separate hormones are at play here, 1) Melatonin, released by the pineal gland which builds up gradually as darkness falls to begin the scavenging process and 2) Seratonin which increases with daylight.

Two other major factors in cancer prevalence are Vitamin D and high meat consumption. Vitamin D is a essential to maintain a healthy immune system, and meat is extremely healthy when eaten in the right quantities, but not when out of proportion to vegetables.

Obesity is also a known factor, thought to be the second major cause of cancer in the UK.

DIABETES TYPE 3…YES, 3

Type 3 diabetes is a title that has been proposed for Alzheimer’s disease which results from resistance to insulin in the brain.

Studies carried out by the research team at Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University identified the possibility of a new form of diabetes after finding that insulin resistance can occur in the brain

Lead researcher, Dr Suzanne de la Monte, carried out a further study in 2012 to further investigate the link.

The researchers pinpoint resistance to insulin and insulin-like growth factor as being a key part of the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

AIRLANDER 10 – THE NEW AIRSHIP

The largest aircraft in the world is the UK’s Airlander 10, a hybrid airship filled with helium. It can take off even in 35 knot winds, carry a 10 ton payload and can stay in the air for up to 5 days.

The shape of the structure-less envelope acts as a wing to provide lift and four propellers powered by diesel make it fast and maneuverable. It weighs a net 1 tonne for additional control and stability.

Here is the Airlander 10, moments before it famously crashed!

CALORIES IN, CALORIES OUT – WRONG!

Any dietary advice you are given that references calories in/calories out as a weight loss method should be immediately ignored because the data supporting this theory is from just ONE study involving 12 PEOPLE. Coca Cola and many other food producers base their entire culture on recommending that you can enjoy their products as long as you watch your calories in/calories out, usually their adverts contain sporty scenarios showing how fit people can chug away on sugary drinks and snacks with impunity.

But, we already know from shows like America’s Biggest Loser all the sad, tragic tales of contestants putting the weight back on in the following weeks because this idea is basically wrong. Hormones play a much bigger part in weight gain/loss than calorie counting, which is why puberty (i.e. hormones) adds so much fat and muscle to kids growing up, why gastric bypasses work, why insulin (a hormone) resistance is such a massive problem worldwide, why there are 1.5 billion overweight people in the world eating the recommended high carbohydrate diet.

CONTACTS.CSV IMPORT FAILED TRANSLATOR – GMAIL TO OUTLOOK

If you look at the contacts.csv file generated by Google and compare it to the one Outlook usually exports, you will notice that the Outlook one contains quotes around every field. This gave me the clue that perhaps the data itself was the culprit when the import failed with the “translator failed” message, and indeed I traced the error to a contact that had a photo assigned to him. The contact’s photo was a very long URL beginning with http://…… and after taking this one contact out of the csv file the import worked fine. Suggestion: Google; add quotes around your fields when you generate a CSV file!

RDP SESSION INCORRECT PASSWORD – BUT IS NOT!

I found my own answer to this issue after I got access to the machine physically and was able to view the security logs for the failed login attempts.  For some reason windows seven required that I use the entire computer name \\computer name\account name\ to get to the machine whereas Vista did not require full name.  Problem solved as long as I use the full name convention for the computer as expected behind the ts gateway.  Also don’t pass the ts gateway credentials on to the remote computer as this causes it to want to log on with those credentials at the machine.

BEFORE YOU REINSTALL WINDOWS

*Here to assume that disk 0 is a booting device.

a) After you boot your computer using Windows 8 DVD or System Repair Disc, a black screen
appears with gray text “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD“. Press any key.
b) Select the correct time and Keyboard type.
c) Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.
d) Select Troubleshoot from Choose an optionscreen.
e) Click Advanced options in Troubleshootscreen.
f) Click on Command Prompt.
g) Type these following commands and hit enter after each line of command:
“#” is an instruction comment so not to type it 😉

# to execute diskpart program
diskpart
DISKPART> list disk
DISKPART> select disk 0
DISKPART> list volume
# find your system partition with fat32 file system. Here to assume it as volume 2.
DISKPART> select volume 2
# To assign drive letter.
# If you want to remove drive letter, use remove command.
DISKPART> assign letter=b:
# To terminate diskpart command.
DISKPART> exit

# Now, you sould move to b:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\, as windows stores BCD in this folder.
cd /d b:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\
# this is not necessary.
ren BCD BCD.bak
# To write a new bootsector on your system partition.
bootrec /fixboot
# If your windows running, you should do from here.
# To create BCD store. “/f ALL” is to update BIOS setting including UEFI firmware/NVRAM.
# Replace “ja-JP” with your language or remove “/l” option if you use English, of course.
# It might be sense only typing “bcdboot c:\Windows“.
bcdboot c:\Windows /l ja-JP /s b: /f ALL

That’s that. Booting information of your PC has been written over.

Let’s reboot and see whether it go fine or not!”
A couple things to note. First, when using command select disk, this is referring to your Windows 10 boot/repair media located in your CD or USB drive. Second, at the final step I was a little confused by the wording when addressing the language. The command I used was bcdboot c:\Windows /l en-US /s b: /f All. That’s about it! I was just about ready to wipe everything out and do a fresh install, so I’m incredibly glad I found this post.

1.1.1.1 – THE FASTEST DNS SERVER, WITH PROTECTION

1.1.1.1

If you access the Internet via a broadband router then you will no doubt be using the built in DNS server provided by your ISP. DNS servers just lookup the ip address of the webpage you are looking for, but it is possible to change your DNS server to different ones around the world that have specfic features like super-fast speed, family filters, DDOS protection and many other things.

Cloudfare’s 1.1.1.1 and a backup of 1.0.0.1 offer very fast lookups and filters from bad websites. You can also use OpenDNS for family filtered lookups using 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123.

“To use FamilyShield, you should set your DNS server entries as: 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123.  On our website, you’ll may notice that OpenDNS’ DNS servers are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, but these do not apply to FamilyShield customers.”

CURRENT ACCOUNT SWITCH GIVES 3 YEARS FORWARDING

Stray payments from old accounts after you’ve switched will continue for 3 years, but that may be extended to 10 under new plans. For example, if you’ve switched from Barclays to Starling and somebody keeps sending you payments to your old Barclays, then it will still be credited to your Starling, even 3 years from now. The new plan is to continue as long as a payment is made within an 18 month period (a keep-alive period) for up to 10 years, otherwise the forwarding will stop.

TURN OFF WI-FI AT NIGHT?

While you are sleeping, as your body repairs and regenerates, as your brain sorts and files memories, why not do yourself a favour and turn off your WiFi?

It’s questionable whether EMF radiation is having a lifetime impact on your health, but why not buy a timer for £5 from Wilko, Argos or Homebase and set it to go off automatically from 11pm until 7am (and engage airplane mode on your phone as well if you have it next to you in the bedroom).

There’s very little actual data showing even basic correlation of smartphone and WiFi use causing cancer or tumours, because it’s thought that the frequencies used (being lower even than visible light) passes through us harmlessly and we’ve now had 20 years of data to research the effects.

Also use a blue filter if you read your smartphone in bed, many smartphones now come with “comfort mode” viewing buit in these days but if not download an app.

If you want to go the whole hog you should use your smartphone at least 1 inch away from your ear, or use a headphone cable, and get an EMF liner for your bag which blocks harmful radiation.

GDPR COMES INTO EFFECT 25TH MAY 2018

The new General Data Protection Regulation comes into effect across all member states (which includes UK right now) which means an upgrade to the data privacy laws across Europe. In simple terms, the rules are designed to make companies who deal with personal data look after them with more care and consideration in order to guard against data breaches like the one we saw with Talk Talk recently.

I have updated my Privacy Policy to make you aware of how secure my systems are, what data I might hold on you and how you can request or remove any personal data. Also, if you want to continue receiving my Newsletter I am asking everyone to consent to it again by opting in on my website by clicking on the Subscribe button.

WINDOWS 10 PROFILE CORRUPTION

There’s a strange thing happening occasionally on Windows 10 machines, the profile gets corrupted and you end up with a TEMP user to log in with, and all your icons are missing. The fix is quite easy and I outline it below:

  1. Start, Run, Regedit
  2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-12345… (whatever your user profile)
  3. Set “State” to “0”
  4. Set “RefCount” to “0” (if it doesn’t exist make it – DWORD 32bit)
  5. Reboot

Next time your offered a choice of “beans or peas” in a diner or restaurant, go with the healthy option, say “Peas, please“. BTW, have you ever seen such an absolute little evasive shit as Jeremy Hunt? This man checked out from helping the nation’s health long ago. And funny how his name rhymes with his general constitution.

NEVER, EVER BUY A NAS DRIVE! – HERE ARE THE REASONS:

Network Attached Storage “seems” like a great idea, a nice, neat, little box sitting in the office whirring away storing your office files and not taking up too much room or power. BUT little do you know how dangerous these devices are to your files, in so many ways:

  1. They contain a mirrored pair of hard drives so that if one drive fails the other carries on, but there is no warning because no one is monitoring it, and believe me, it WILL fail eventually.
  2. They run Linux, so unless you know your way around it expertly, you are gonna eventually hit trouble.
  3. You can’t hook up a monitor to it, so if you can’t access it via the network port you are stuffed.
  4. In the event of failure, if you take it apart, remove the drives and hook them up to a PC you *might* be lucky to see the data.

My colleague was asked to help set up a NAS for a new customer, “Throw it in the bin now,” was his advice. “But it’s got two drives”, “Ok, throw both of them in the bin now!”

A NAS drive earlier today, before losing all your data.

Absolutely incredible how the British diet has changed from just a generation or two ago. Crisps, chocolates, biscuits, cakes, cereals and other ultra-processed foods are now making up half our national diet.

ITV1 TRICKS OF THE RESTAURANT TRADE

No wonder we are getting cancer and dying. They get the rice pre-cooked and frozen, the butter chicken packed in plastic and microwaved when ordered.

Sheesh, I think it’s gone too far. And the worse thing is the presenters Simon Rimmer and Sophie Morgan are smiling and laughing all the way through it, taking it all as normal…THIS REALLY IS NOT NORMAL.

I eat out maybe twice a month, but even that seems too much knowing how restaurant food is prepared. Thankfully, I prefer home-cooked food anyway and I know exactly what’s going into it.

EUROVISON 2018!!!

After carefully reviewing all the entries several times I have made my decision BUT that won’t really help in predicting who will win. Although this is the world’s PREMIER song writing contest, there are a few peculiarities within the voting system that make it difficult for the best song to win.

Firstly, there are many, many people who still think the Eurovision is a “Boom Bang-a-Bang” type affair and will pick the song that has some chintzy novelty to it (ISRAEL). Then there are the countries that block vote for each other (Greece / Cyprus, Russia / Belarus, Serbia / Croatia, Sweden / Norway) usually because they are neighbours or ending hostilities but in the case Turkey / Germany more to do with the massive Turkish population in Germany. Then there are the countries like France and Britain or, strangely, Ireland and Britain who hate each other. Also, there are the smaller countries like San Marino and Malta who will be coming near the bottom, again, not because of voting but more to do with lack of promotion and song-writing credentials.

Taking these into consideration, you can arrive at a prediction with some manipulation of the votes. The UK could win again one day if we split into Wales, Scotland, N.Ireland and awarded each other top marks, and perhaps reviewed our Foreign Policy. The voting system has been altered slightly for this year, adding some weight to the top ranked song by group of judges and taking out the outlier judgements, similar to the marking in Olympic figure skating, and also the results will be announced in 2 stages, jury then popular. This means the winner won’t be known until the last moment.

My picks? Top: FYR Macedonia, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden. Bottom: Iceland, San Marino, Denmark. Winner: Israel or Belarus.

Who should win Eurovision 2018? Vote now!

WINDOWS 10 APPS NOT LOADING FIRST TIME [SOLVED]

I have been experiencing a problem with the new Metro apps on Windows 10, they half load up then stop. If you close then re-open and they are absolutely fine. It seems this is quite a common problem and the solution is to create a new Power Plan in Settings. That’s all there is to it (see My Custom Plan 1 below).

WINDOWS 10 – UAC SET to NONE, NOT WORKING

There’s a peculiar thing going on with User Account Control, you set it to “none” but in fact it doesn’t actually change it in the registry. Check the registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. In the details pane (Right Pane), locate the EnableLUA key (REG_DWORD type). Double click to Modify. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.

THE START MENU is THE DESKTOP NOW!

In Windows 10, the Desktop is still there but it plays a less important role. The idea is that the (Metro) Start Menu IS the Desktop and Start Menu rolled into one. Just as you would with the Desktop, you have to configure it to your liking, your needs. You can also change the settings to show the various folders you need quick access to ON THE LEFT. It even says “START” at the top. In a way, this is better than the Desktop because you need only click the Start Button to access your programs and folders, with an unlimited scroll all the way down, like the proverbial turtles.

BROTHER CONTROL CENTER 4 CONTAINS MULTIPLE PRINTERS

Over a few months you tend to get several Brother printers appearing in the Control Center program for some weird reason. The extra printers/scanners have a #2 or #3 designation and you can build up a nice big list of them. In the picture below, the printer is a MFC-J4625DW LAN but there are 2 more, MFC-J4625DW LAN #2 and MFC-J4625DW. What you should do is choose the non-functioning extra printers and then choose Uninstall from the Tools section. Do this as many times as is necessary, bearing in mind if you remove all the printers then you will need to re-install the brother printer driver software from scratch because the final printer uninstall gets rid of everything.

WINDOWS 10 OCCASIONALLY FREEZES…

…and the Disk activity in Task Manager is 100%. These are classic symptoms of a disk problem so it’s time to replace it. My suggestion would be to go SSD by cloning your disk with MiniTool. You connect BOTH drives, old and new to the PC or laptop and then do the clone. When finished, you remove the old drive and with any luck you will boot off the new drive and it will no longer freeze AND be super fast.
